Pastors's Message

The Brick

OK, it’s Lent, it’s Confirmation Sunday, it’s Palm Sunday, it’s Holy Week, it’s Easter Sunday with all the family and church events, so you’re probably a little busy. So am I but then again, well, read this story I received in my email.

THE BRICK

A young, successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed the spot, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag’s passenger side door!

He slammed on the brakes and spun the Jag back around to the spot from where the brick had been thrown. He jumped out of the car, grabbed the little boy standing there, and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the kid, “What did you do that for? That’s a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money to fix my car! Why did you do that?

“Please, mister, please. I’m sorry, I didn’t know what else to do!” pleaded the youngster. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop.” Tears were dripping down the boy’s chin as he pointed around the parked car. “It’s my brother,” he said. “He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up.” Choking, the boy asked the executive, “Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He’s too weak and too heavy for me.”

Stunned beyond words, the executive lifted the handicapped brother back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief to wipe the scratches. He checked to see if everything was OK with the boy. “Thank you and God bless you,” the grateful brother said to him. The man then watched the little boy push his brother down the sidewalk toward home.

It was a long walk back to his Jaguar - a long, slow walk. He never did repair the door. He kept the dent to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention.

God whispers in your soul, speaking to your heart through His Word, the Bible. Sometimes when you don’t think you have time to listen, He has to “throw a brick” at you to get your attention. It’s your choice: Listen to His Word, keep your eyes open to what’s happening around you OR wait for the brick.

From someone who’s been hit by a brick or two . . .

Glad to be in Christ’s service,
