High Upon a Rock (Psalm 27:5) For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in His dwelling; He will hide me in the shelter of His tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. In an earlier time of my life, I was sitting on a rock on a mountain slope in Colorado. I had made a climb of medium difficulty, and I was ready to just sit in the warm sunshine for a while. I needed the solitary time to think and pray. Some things in my life were not working well, some other things were going well enough. My climb took me up a series of switchbacks on the trail. For those of you who have not done much mountain hiking, a switchback is a turn in the trail that reverses direction completely from the way you were walking. It is amazing how different the same trail, the same slope can look when you see it, walk it from a different direction. As we journey through this life, some hard times can seem so impossible to figure out, let alone solve them. A little farther down the road, we can either look back to see it all in a new way or we can see beyond what our troubles are to new possibilities. Once I reached the top of the mountain, that seat on a sun-warmed rock was like a throne. Just a gentle breeze, no sounds beyond the wind in the pines and an occasional bird. Just the kind of peaceful moment that we long to experience in our busier times. I recall sitting there for quite a few minutes, maybe even a half hour. Thirty minutes of peaceful solitude can seem refreshingly long and yet, all too short. I spent a bit of time in prayer about the things foremost on my mind. The hike back down was good in a different way. I slept well that night. As I look back on that gift of a day, I think of the words of the Psalm printed above. In the day of trouble He will keep me safe. This promise from God is for all of His people, all of those who believe in Jesus and follow Him. I needed this reassurance back then, and I imagine there are times when you need it as well. He will hide me in the shelter of His tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. There have certainly been those times when I needed shelter from the Lord. I hope you will recognize the times when our Lord will protect you and give you those much-needed moments of peace & security. I fondly remember that day sitting on that rock up high. The doctors tell me that since the collapse of my lung, my mountain climbing days are over. So I will cherish the memory a bit more. More than that, I will cherish the love of my Lord Jesus that protects me. I pray that you will trust in and experience this side of His love for you.
