Pastors's Message

If You Think It's Hot Now!

“If you think it’s hot now, just wait till after Judgment Day!” I’ve heard that line spoken as an attempt to be humorous. I have a harder time finding it funny anymore. The heat referred to is the fires of hell. Jesus spoke of the fires of hell as being real.

  • “Whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” (Matthew 5:22)

  • “Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. And these will go away into eternal punishment..." (Matt.25:41,46)

  • “...when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His might...” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9)

  • “Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:14-15)

The reality is this: Anyone who does not believe in Jesus enough to follow His will and receive His sacramental gifts of forgiveness & new life simply will not be in heaven after this life. Yes, there are people who deny the reality of hell, who say that Jesus is so loving that He could never send anyone to any such place of torment as hell. These people are wrong. Jesus is right.

So the next time you hear anyone making a joke about the heat of the Iowa summer as if it was comparable to hell, stop laughing about it. Remember what Jesus said about it. Take the time to speak with those neighbors or family members who don’t follow Jesus. Tell them about the effort Jesus went to at the cross to open heaven to them, to all of us. The Gospel about Jesus Christ is the only eternal air conditioning we can receive.

Glad to be in Christ’s service,
