Happy New Year!

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." (Revelation 21:1-2,5)

Happy New Year! That’s how we greet one another on 12/31 & 1/1/03. The new year brings possibilities for a better time. We plan to be better people, better at living our faith, better at loving our families and friends, better all the way around. Some of us will make resolutions about the improvements we plan to make in the new year. Most of us will celebrate another birthday in 2003. We will reach new stages in life, some great, some less than what we used to be, some just at the beginning of life.

Let’s widen the view a bit. Our world is still going to be a dangerous place to live. War appears even more likely, terrorism is now a daily reality, and enemies always seem to arise in new places. Illness will get to us, money troubles will still be there for us, conflict in the family will never totally go away, and life will have its downs for all of us. So much for “Happy New Year”, eh?

It is fantastic to know that above and beyond all the less-than-happy-stuff of the new year, God has plans for a total renewing of the universe! Where we must put up with the same old evil, God has already planned and constructed the most absolutely brand new heavenly life for us! This is a place with no death, no sorrow for any reason, no pain from any illness! For us who trust in Jesus Christ, there will be a happy new eternity! It’s all possible because Jesus has destroyed the powers of evil, sin, death, hell, and the devil by His death & resurrection. We have a definite future with Jesus, we are full of reasons to be hopeful people, and that cannot be taken away from us! Hallelujah!

I guess it will be a happy new year after all.
