What's Your Attitude?

In his letter to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul writes, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves" (Philippians 2:3). Now, as well as then, this is a directive that runs counter to human will. There is no area of life that is exempt from our tendency to consider our own interests first and those of others a distance second. Who would sacrifice his career, his comfort, his family for another - particularly if that "other" were ungrateful?

Jesus, our Savior, had much more to give up than we. He left the glories of Heaven for the squalor of a stable. He left the side of His Father Who called Him His beloved Son to live with argumentative, self-centered, slow-to-understand humans. Yet willingly, joyfully He came to earth in human form, born of a woman, and subject to all the frailties of humanity.

Paul put it this way: "Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant" (Philippians 2:6-7a). And, Paul says, we should have that attitude.

At Christmas we celebrate the birth of a Baby. That whole account still leaves us breathless even after hearing it often, just as our Lord and Savior does. By grace, let us adopt the attitude of Christ Jesus.

In Christ,
