Pastors's Message

The Greatest Gift

“On coming to the house, they saw the Child with His mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.” Matthew 2:11

Maybe you rarely think about the Epiphany story, but then maybe you do think about it. We have wondered about the identities, the personalities of these men who came from the East to seek the Child Jesus. How many were they? Sure, three gifts are listed by Matthew, but the exact number of Magi (Wise Men) is not stated. Exactly where did they come from? Where did they go after seeing Jesus? Were the rest of their lives affected by their visit to the Christ Child? No sure answers can be given to these questions.

But one thing you can be sure of: Like the Magi, you and I have been led to Jesus by the urging of the Holy Spirit. We too have come to worship Him and be changed by our experience with Jesus. We could say that we too bring gifts and offerings to Him, but then we’d miss a deeper truth. Jesus was actually the greatest Gift to the Magi and to us. In Jesus we receive all the grace, the love, the forgiveness of our sins and all other blessings from the Lord.

The Wise Men were led to Jesus by a fantastic star; we have been led to Him by the Word of God which the Spirit uses to guide us. I pray that your life will never be the same as it was before you came to know Jesus. You see, being baptized into the name of God changes us and will not leave us the same, no matter how comfortable that may have been. Like the Magi, may you be forced to seek Jesus as you travel through this life. When you reach heaven’s door, you won’t be sorry for the change Jesus brought into your life.

Glad to be in Christ’s service,
   Pastor Lyle Hansen
