July 2003

Here are a few words from God about what
we say and the results of what we say:

(Prov.12:5-6) The plans of the righteous are just, but the advice of the wicked is deceitful. 6 The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them.

(Prov.12:13-14) An evil man is trapped by his sinful talk, but a righteous man escapes trouble. 14 From the fruit of his lips a man is filled with good things as surely as the work of his hands rewards him.

(Prov.12:17-19) A truthful witness gives honest testimony, but a false witness tells lies. 18 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. 19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

(Prov.12:22-23,25) The LORD detests lying lips, but He delights in men who are truthful. 23 A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly. 25 An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.

Notice the pattern? Where human speech is evil, bad results always happen. The person who speaks evil words is often the one who suffers these results. Let's make it personal: if you or I are the person who speaks lies, deceitful words, words to hurt another person, words that pierce like a sword, or blurting out folly, then we can expect certain results. What results can we expect? Consider this list:

-deceitful advice, words that can cause bloodshed

    -being trapped by sinful talk

-lies & a lying tongue that doesn't last long

-being detested by the Lord, knowing anxiety.

How about if we speak words that are pleasing to the Lord? What results can we expect?

-plans that are just & fair

-words that rescue us from trouble

-escape from trouble, being filled with good things

    -honest testimony

-wisdom that causes healing of the hurts

-truth that will endure forever, experiencing the delight of the Lord

-self control to know when to speak and when to keep silent

-kind words that will cheer us up

Well, you take a long look at both lists. I believe that obeying God's commands about the words we speak will bring us His blessings. May your month of July be full of God's good words and blessings!
