Pastors's Message

Where is Your Faith?

Luke 8:22-25
One day He (Jesus) got into a boat with His disciples, and He said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, and as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And He awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even winds and water, and they obey Him?”

There is that hard question to consider or answer, “Where is your faith?” I don’t know about you, but that question from Jesus makes me cringe when I’ve been worrying or staying awake at night wondering about this or that. Lately, I have had a few questions on my mind.

After the decision on our possible building project, I have wondered what direction we will go in the near future with the whole ministry here at Good Shepherd. I have heard from quite a few of you, the members of Good Shepherd. Some are deeply concerned about a division amongst us, while others believe this is the time to head deeper into spiritual growth. Without a doubt, the spiritual growth is a definite direction. We have that command from the Lord all the time.

Some members are upset and unsure about the direction we should take. I have heard some fear expressed. I have felt some fear myself. Then I read this story from Luke’s Gospel and I hear that question again. Jesus reminds us that our faith is not in our work together, but in Him.

Even the disciples knew fear and uncertainty. We will survive such feelings; we will be blessed by the Lord as we remain faithful to Him. How do I know this? I know the One who could calm the angry seas and stormy weather. He is the One who asks us to trust Him, even if we can’t see where we are heading. He will lead us here, and He will lead us home eventually. So He asks each of us, “Where is your faith?”

Glad to be in Christ’s service,
