Summer Plans

(Matthew 6:28-30) 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”

Spring is here, the grass has been mowed several times already, the birds have built their nests in expectation of new life, the crops are mostly in the fields by now, and we are enjoying the warmer weather. Our children are looking forward to being finished with the school year. So are our teachers!

We are making plans for vacations, for summer activities, and for the projects we would like to complete around the house or farm this summer. In the midst of all this anticipation and planning, we will think about how we can afford to do what we want to do. Isn’t that a bummer, just thinking about money in the midst of planning for fun!? Yet it is necessary to do adequate planning. We can’t just put it all on the credit card and hope they won’t ask for payment. Jesus tells us not to worry; He does not tell us we have no need for planning or managing our finances with wisdom.

I hope and pray that you will not be worrying about receiving your “daily bread” this summer. God has promised to provide for us! That means we can take time to worship and support His kingdom work in our congregation AND enjoy our summer plans for work and fun.

I can imagine some of you thinking, “Oh no, he just had to bring up church attendance and offerings!”

Sorry to bust your bubble, but Jesus never takes a vacation from caring for us. He expects us to remember Him every day of the year, not just during the school year. He gives us His best every moment of our lives. We can respond with gratitude and worship or we can begrudge Him our time, effort, and gifts.

I wish you a happy, fulfilling summer! Fill it up with both Jesus and fun! Read Matthew 6:19-21!

In Christ,
  Pastor Lyle Hansen
