Pastors's Message

Repent and Believe

"The time has come," He said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" (Mark 1:15)

This is one of the first speeches which Jesus made in His public ministry. “Repent” is one of the key words in this verse. The basic idea of repenting is changing from evil to good. The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 1. Lent is a season of the church calendar focused on the greatest work of Jesus on the cross. Repent is a Lenten word, a word that describes our response to what Jesus has done for us.

  • Do you really believe that you need a Savior? If you answer “no”, not much of what follows will make any sense to you. If you answer “yes”, then you are admitting that you are a sinful human soul in need of God’s forgiveness so you won’t go to hell.

  • Do you really believe that Jesus is the promised Savior who came to be perfect in your place? If you answer “no”, then who are you expecting to be the Savior you need? If you answer “yes”, then you are admitting you are not now and can never be perfect.

  • Do you really believe that Jesus suffered & died in your place? If you answer “no”, then are you saying you expect to suffer and die without any hope of heaven? If you answer “yes”, then you are confessing that Jesus is the Substitute for you and for all people.

  • Do you believe that Jesus rose from the dead to conquer death for you and to open heaven to you? If you answer “no”, then what do you believe will happen to you after you die? If you answer “yes”, then you are confessing that there is life after death because of Jesus Christ and that you will go to heaven because of Jesus’ resurrection.

To be honest about it, if you answered “no” to any of these questions, you are in trouble. You need to repent, to change what you believe and how you live. If you answered “yes” to these questions, then you have the privilege of God’s forgiveness and the responsibility to live the penitential life. And what is the penitential life all about? Come to worship on Wednesday nights or next weekend and you will learn about this life.

In Christ,
