Pastors's Message

Honesty

Honesty is hardly ever heard” so went the lyrics of a Billy Joel song. It is a sad thought in reality. We praise the virtue of honesty and then do not practice it. Yet we expect honesty from other people. We know that life goes better when we are honest with God, with each other and with ourselves. Why is honesty so difficult to do? We already know the answer to that question – our sinful nature is naturally dishonest. This the natural way of people, young and old, then and now. It will continue to be the way of people until the One who is The Truth returns to earth. So what should we do while we wait for Him to come again?

1. Be honest in our business dealings, in the way we perform our jobs and vocations.

Our honesty may not always be noticed in positive ways, but it will eventually be a good witness to someone. Jacob was having some work difficulties with his father-in-law Laban. In their discussion Jacob said, “And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored, will be considered stolen.” (Genesis 30:33)

Our honesty will also testify well for us in the future. Honesty spoke up in the past as we hear about the repair crews working on the temple in Jerusalem many years ago, “They did not require an accounting from those to whom they gave the money to pay the workers, because they acted with complete honesty.”(2 Kings 12:15)

2. Be honest with ourselves about ourselves.

Have you ever thought somebody else was conceited, had a higher opinion of themselves than you thought they should have? Do you suppose anyone has ever had that thought about you? Sometimes we may even hold a lower opinion of ourselves than we should hold. Higher or lower, it is hard for us to be accurate about who we are. We can’t see ourselves through the eyes of other people. They can’t always see us without their own feelings or opinions getting in the way. Isn’t it great to know that God can always see us accurately? We don’t have to pretend to be something or anything we are not. Jesus also told us, "If you hold to My teaching, you are really My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32)

I hope that in the next month or so you will experience the freedom of the truth that Christ gives to us, the Truth that He is for us and the truth that He lives with us. Have a great autumn season and Thanksgiving!

Glad to be in Christ’s service,
