Is it possible to spoil a child? Is it possible to spoil a child? Can we give our children too much? Will our children grow up to be adults who manage their finances well? Will the world they live in, raise their children in be a world that knows the safety and prosperity that we have known? Each of these questions is a legitimate concern for parents and grandparents. We love our children and we want them to enjoy a happy life. So we do our best to train them how to live in this world, in this nation where we enjoy so many of God's blessings. How do we train them to live? 1. We train our children how to live in this world by our own examples. The way we live now, the way we set our priorities about what is important will demonstrate something to our children about successful living. This is easy to say, but the necessary question that goes with it is, "How are we living?" How successful are we living? Are we living the way Jesus taught us to live? Are we living as forgiven sinners who know how to forgive each other? Are we living the holiest life we can as our response to God's grace? Answering questions like these may be a chore that you'd rather avoid. Let's make it easier to start finding the answers. Sit back, get something refreshing to drink, and ask yourself, "What is most important to me? Where do I put the most effort and time? Who am I living for?" When we can give accurate answers to those questions, we can evaluate the example we are setting for our children. 2. We can train our children how to live in this world by teaching them to live the faith. We don't know what the future holds for the next generations, so we better teach them how to live with trust and hope. To live with worry and fear will only make their lives worse. We adults from the grandparents to the parents have learned the bad experiences that come with worry & fear. Jesus taught us to set our priorities on God's righteousness and then to trust that our Father in heaven will meet all our needs, even those which we don't yet know about. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matt. 6:33) We will train our children well as we demonstrate to them this living faith in Christ. They will be prepared to live as they are taught about God's providing love. They will be ready to face whatever each day shall bring as they know the difference that faith in Christ's death and resurrection can make. All of this article stems from the command given to us as families on earth and as the larger family in Christ: Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. (Proverbs 22:6) May God continue to give us His grace and strength to carry out this blessed task of preparing our children to live with hope in this uncertain world.
