Pastors's Message

It's a Back-To-School Special!

I can imagine that at least some of you who are parents of school-age children have read or heard these words in the last couple of weeks. We are searching for clothing, school supplies, book bags, all sorts of writing tools, crayons, - the list just goes on and on. It’s part of our culture that we take the time to prepare our children for returning to school.

I’d like to take us toward a different direction for preparing our children for learning. We can always purchase the necessary goods for our children’s school needs. We may even be able to buy them the latest and most expensive clothes, gadgets, and toys that the advertisers tell us to get.

  • But have we given them our time, our attention, our love?

  • Kids can get all the other stuff eventually, but do they have a positive relationship with us?
  • More important yet, do we give them our personal examples of wanting to have a great, a close relationship with Jesus?
  • Do we worship with them on the weekends?
  • Do we attend adult Sunday School while they go to their classes?
  • Are we going over their lessons each day when they and we arrive home from work and school?
  • Do we listen to the stories they tell of what happened that day without interrupting them to tell them how we think they should have handled the situation? (we can take time for that after hearing their story)
  • Are we teaching them how to pray? If you don’t know what to say, then just open the small catechism and read the chief parts out loud to them and finish with the Lord’s Prayer. You will make a massive difference in their spiritual lives.
  • Are we showing them how to live the Christian life? Yes we want them to feel good about themselves, but feelings can only take them through an hour or so. What about their lifetime? What about their forever? A day, a month, or a year is not much in the long run? We don’t know how long our children will live on this earth, so we best prepare them for eternity. They can live with Jesus in heaven or without Him in hell.

So again I ask you, what are you doing to prepare your children for learning this fall? Take advantage of our midweek activities for your children in grades 1-8 or our classes for God’s children from nursery to age 150 (that should cover all of us).

Glad to be in Christ’s service,
   Pastor Lyle Hansen
